Topaz
The name topaz comes from the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning, “fire,” a reference to the range of flame-like colours of the gem, including orangey-yellow, amber-gold and sherry-red. Topaz also occurs in other colours, such as browns, pinks, purples and blues. The most valuable variety is called imperial topaz - a beautiful reddish-gold colour. Topaz also occurs in browns, pinks, purples and blues. While topaz is a hard and durable gem, it cleaves easily and care must be taken to prevent it from receiving a hard blow.
